The media is reporting the following: Authorities Wednesday began removing the remains of more than 30 people from a flooded nursing home in a suburban parish. The discovery at St. Rita's Nursing Home in lower St. Bernard Parish came as 25,000 body bags arrived at the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals. (Full story) On Thursday, the official death toll from Hurricane Katrina stood at 294, but that number is expected to rise dramatically. Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts
I just received an e-mail from the Texas Health Care Association. Nursing Homes in East Texas are being asked to take Louisiana residents. Of course, this raises questions about reimbursement for Medicaid residents. According to THCA: Reimbursement for services is an issue that is to be worked out between the two nursing facilities. Also, if you are considering taking in these residents, you will not be allowed to exceed occupancy as allowed by your Texas license. You must … [Read more...] about Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts
Looters Target Nursing Home
This is truly disturbing: Managers at a nursing home were prepared to cope with the power outages and had enough food for days, but then the looting began. The Covenant Home's bus driver surrendered the vehicle to carjackers after being threatened. Bands of people drove by the nursing home, shouting to residents, ``Get out!'' On Wednesday, 80 residents, most of them in wheelchairs, were being evacuated to other nursing homes in the state. ``We had enough food for 10 days,'' said Peggy … [Read more...] about Looters Target Nursing Home
Hurricane Katrina
I haven't found much in the news about how Hurricane Katrina is affecting Nursing Homes. I did find this very troubling snippet: While concerned about his brother's well-being, Booth also was saying a prayer for the residents of a nursing home in New Orleans where two of his friends work as nurses. The administrator of the nursing home had rented city buses to help transport residents from the facility. However, when Ray Nagin, mayor of New Orleans, commandeered the city's bus fleet for a … [Read more...] about Hurricane Katrina
Sue Bob’s Diary: Adventures in HIPAA Land Part 1: The Doctor’s Appointment
Applies to all facilities and covered entities Posted October 1, 2002 By Jerri Lynn Ward, J.D., Garlo Ward, P.C. I pulled into Dr. Eberhardt's parking lot on a hot, steamy Texas Hill Country day in August. As I got out of the car, I could see the heat shimmering up from the parking lot. For weeks, I had been complaining to everyone I knew about a pain in my hip. Finally, my office manager sat me down and said, "Suzanne Roberta Moeckle! You get on the phone right now and call your … [Read more...] about Sue Bob’s Diary: Adventures in HIPAA Land Part 1: The Doctor’s Appointment
Sue Bob’s Diary: Adventures in HIPAA Land Part 2: Going to the Drug Store
Applies to all facilities and covered entities Posted October 10, 2002 By Jerri Lynn Ward, J.D., Garlo Ward, P.C. I left Dr. Eberhardt's office and drove to the town square to go to the drugstore. Dale Nichols is the town pharmacist. He grew up in this town, and has only left long enough to go to college and pharmacy school. I walked out of the searing heat into the cool of Dale's drugstore. Dale was standing behind the counter, he looked at me with the same wary look in his eye … [Read more...] about Sue Bob’s Diary: Adventures in HIPAA Land Part 2: Going to the Drug Store
Sue Bob’s Diary: Adventures in HIPAA Land Part 3: A Visit to the Nursing Home, Chapter 1
Applies to all facilities and covered entities Posted November 6, 2002 By Jerri Lynn Ward, J.D., Garlo Ward, P.C. I walked up the sidewalk to Serendipity Village Rest Home to visit my grandparents. One advantage of having lived in the same small town where my folks and their folks grew up was that all of my grandparents got to live in the same rest home. Their lives at Serendipity were one seamless continuation of their lives in the town. As I walked up to the door, I saw a man walk … [Read more...] about Sue Bob’s Diary: Adventures in HIPAA Land Part 3: A Visit to the Nursing Home, Chapter 1
Sue Bob’s Diary: Adventures in HIPAA Land Part 4: The Storm
Applies to all facilities and covered entities Posted December 5, 2002 By Jerri Lynn Ward, J.D., Garlo Ward, P.C. I walked into the Serendipity Nursing Home. It was 6 pm on a dark, cold and drizzly Saturday evening in November. I was dateless as usual on this Saturday night (but that's a story for another time), so I had decided to come visit all my grandparents and to put on one of my occasional "film festivals" for the residents of the Serendipity. Mr. Heiligenthal, WWII veteran … [Read more...] about Sue Bob’s Diary: Adventures in HIPAA Land Part 4: The Storm
